"Wasn't me!"

My fourteen-year-old son has spoken those words more often than I care to remember. It's always someone else's fault - most often, his sister's. To my son, blaming comes almost as naturally as the gray roots he's causing to sprout from my head. Hey, at least he’s doing his part to keep Clairol in business!

Okay, so my son isn’t the only one ever to speak those words, “Wasn’t me!” After all, Adam started the whole blaming thing that day in the garden: “It was the woman You gave me. She brought me the fruit and I ate it.” But Eve wasn’t about to take the fall: “It was the serpent. He tricked me.” (Genesis 3)

Can’t you just picture God rolling His eyes at that one?

With sin, came blame. And because none of us is yet perfected (contrary to my teenaged son’s not-so-humble perception of himself) blaming and making excuses is still very much alive and well today. So how can I get my son to stop playing the blame game where everyone loses?

I suppose I can start by setting an example. I might not say the words, "Wasn't me!" but when it takes longer to check out at the grocery store than it does to do my shopping, I excuse my impatience: It's the cashier's fault! In the same way, I am much more likely to show mercy to my son when he takes responsibility for his actions and stops blaming his sister. Convincing him of that, however, may take some time.

Just like convincing me that my son isn’t the cause of my gray hair isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Allowance – not tolerance – is one of the keys to quicker manifestation of your heart’s desires. To tolerate something means you’re letting it be, but you do not like it.

The word “allows” means “to permit.” By allowing yourself to be yourself – you allow others to be themselves. You allow the moments to be themselves. By allowing you are not resisting the flow, you are not pushing against it and the flow runs smoother and quicker.

Learning to allow gives permission for you to relax. On this journey of learning about ourselves and how the law of attraction works we get excited, this is natural. In this excitement, however, we want things to happen, right now, right away. Due to the nature of our lives here and the way the law of attraction works, there is always a time delay between the emergence of a desire and its manifestation. That time delay benefits us in many ways. On the highway, motorcycles are “small fry”. They’re easy for autos and trucks to miss or disregard. In many important ways, operating a motorcycle is not like driving an automobile. So you have to change your way of thinking and your way of driving when you ride your motorcycle. For example, to turn a motorcycle left or right, it’s not just a matter of turning a steering wheel. You must lean left or right depending on which way you want to go. Your motorcycle has two brakes, and you must learn to use them both and in coordination with each other. Unlike most automobiles which are equipped with automatic transmission, you will need to shift gears on a motorcycle. For this reason, going up or downhill can be particularly tricky. And these are just a few of the differences you need to learn.

What are some of the basics in motorcycle safety?

• Make it easy for automobile and truck drivers to see you.

Wear bright colored clothing. Fluorescent, orange and/or yellow shirts, vests, jackets, and helmets enhance visibility during the day. At night, wear reflective material on helmets, vests/jackets, and even shoes. Remember, you must be seen from the side, not just the back and front. Put reflective material on the sides of your helmet, clothing and shoes, not just on the front and back. If a motorist can’t see you or your bike, he won’t take action to avoid you.

Make it a habit to use your turn signals – always. Turn signals tell other drivers what you plan to do. They make your bike easier to see on the road. Nearby motor vehicle operators are more likely to notice your bike’s flashing turn signal than its activated taillight. Equally important, however, is the need to deactivate your turn signal as soon as you complete your turn or as soon as you decide not to turn after all. If your turn signal remains activated after you have made a turn, the driver behind you may assume you will turn again, and he may pull directly into your path.

Enhance your visibility by tapping your foot brake lightly before you slow down, especially when you anticipate a quick stop. The flashing brake light will alert the driver behind you to your sudden change in speed.

Stay out of blind spots. Motorcyclists are more at risk in a blind spot than other motorists because their cycles are relatively small compared to trucks and automobiles. Whenever you approach a vehicle you may want to pass, you must make a choice, and quickly too. Do you really want to pass? If so, pass as fast as you reasonably can. If not, drop back, well out of the blind spot. The less time you spend in another driver’s blind spot, the safer you will be.

As you travel along the roads and highways behind another vehicle, take care to position your bike where the other driver will be able to see you in his rear view mirror. Keep in mind that intersections are always dangerous. It’s where most motorcycle crashes happen because auto or truck drivers who approach an intersection sometimes fail to see the motorcyclist who has the right of way as he travels down the main thoroughfare.

This usually depends on whether your motorcycle is equipped with a permanent seat specially designed to carry a second person. A passenger who is not properly seated on a motorcycle is at increased risk of falling off a bike and accidental injury.

• Follow state and local traffic laws.

Motorcyclists must follow the same “rules of the road” and traffic regulations as automobiles and trucks. These laws may be even more important to the safety of the motorcycle operator than to drivers of other motor vehicles. After all, motorcycles are not equipped with the same physical protections and restraints found in autos and trucks. Familiarize yourself with the general motor vehicle laws of your state. Just as important, study carefully the statutes directed specifically at the operation of motorcycles. They were enacted to help ensure your safety.

• Take a motorcycle rider skills training course.

You can pay with your life if you don’t learn the essential skills necessary to operate a motorcycle properly and safely. Most everyone takes a driver training course to obtain an automobile driver’s license when they are teenagers. In fact, many states mandate such instruction because well trained automobile operators make for safer roads and highways. It makes just as much sense for motorcycle operators to take a skills training course given by a professional instructor and designed specifically for motorcycle operation.

There are motorcycle rider skills training courses in most states. Your state department of motor vehicles, for one, should have information on such programs. And remember, there are skills training courses not just for the novice but for the more experienced rider as well. Take the time to refresh and refine your rider techniques by taking an advanced skills course every few years.

• Obtain the driver’s license endorsement you need to legally operate a motorcycle in your state.

Statistics kept by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tell us that 25% of the motorcyclists who died as a result of traffic accidents in 2004 were either not licensed at all or were not properly licensed to operate a motorcycle.

• Don’t speed.

In 2004, 36% of all fatal motorcycle accidents were the result of speeding at the time of the accident. It’s simple. Speed kills.

• Keep a safe distance behind other vehicles.

Think you don’t have to maintain the same distance behind an auto or truck that an auto or truck must keep as it travels behind other vehicles? Wrong! A motorcycle ordinarily requires as much stopping distance as an automobile. Studies have shown that following too closely is a major cause of accidents on the part of the motorcyclist.

• Don’t ride in an impaired condition.

It is no surprise that alcohol and other drugs play a substantial role in too many motorcycle accidents. In 2004, for example, alcohol was involved in a much higher percentage of motorcycle accidents (31% higher) than auto accidents. And worse, according to NHSTA, 41 percent of the 1672 motorcyclists who died in single vehicle crashes in 2004 had blood alcohol levels above the legal minimum of .08 g/dL. Never ride while intoxicated.

• Give your bike a “pre-trip” inspection.

Long distance truckers give their tractor trailers daily pre-trip inspections and so should motorcycle operators. Check tire air pressure and the hydraulic fluid level. Look for signs of an oil or gas leak. Do headlights and taillights work in both high and low beam? Are your brake lights and turn signals operational? Do you need to refill your coolant reservoir?

Clutch and throttle should work smoothly. Clean your mirrors and adjust them when needed. Engage your front and rear brake levers, one brake at a time, to ensure they are in working order.

• Never ride someone else’s bike without first familiarizing yourself with its particular features and/or without giving it a pre-trip inspection.

Don’t assume that someone else’s bike is just like yours. Make sure you know the location of the turn signals, the horn, the headlight switch, and the engine cut-off switch. Familiarize yourself with the controls and the bike’s gear pattern. Practice working the throttle, clutch and brakes a few times before you take a borrowed bike for a spin.

• Beware of road surface and other hazards.

Road surfaces that may not be so dangerous for auto and truck drivers may be very dangerous for the motorcyclist. Gravel roads, wet pavement, wet pavement with oil slicks, and paved roads with loose sand and gravel are especially treacherous. These surfaces provide poor traction for motorcycles traveling along them. Motorcyclists should think twice about taking their bikes out at all in mud, snow, or icy conditions. During Autumn, wet leaves can cause problematic conditions as well.

Uneven surfaces can be dangerous. The motorcyclist should drive especially carefully when passing over bumps, broken pavement, potholes, railroad tracks, steel plates, grates, manhole covers or raised lane and highway marker to name just a few.

• Remember that darkness reduces visibility on the road.

If a motorcycle can sometimes travel unnoticed by traffic nearby in broad daylight, the situation at night is even more hazardous. Darkness reduces visibility. At night, it is more difficult for other drivers to see your relatively small motorcycle or to pick up its headlights and taillights from among the myriad of other vehicle lights surrounding you.

It’s up to you to keep the odds on your side. Drive slower at night. Keep a greater distance between you and the vehicle directly ahead of you. Unless you are following immediately behind another vehicle or another vehicle is approaching you from the opposite direction, use your high beams. They will help you see unexpected obstacles or animals in the road in front of you.

• Always remain alert to your surroundings and nearby vehicles.

You can’t take action to avoid a potential accident if you are not aware of the danger. There are negligent motorists on the roads. They may drive recklessly so defensive driving is essential. What is one of the most deadly maneuvers a motorcyclist is likely to confront everyday on the road? It is the other driver who turns left in front of him while the cyclist is doing one of three things: (1) traveling straight, (2) passing the other vehicle, or (3) overtaking the other vehicle. In 2004, 39% of fatal motorcycle accidents occurred under one of the foregoing fact patterns. Do what it takes to ensure the other driver knows you are in his path if he decides to turn left in front of you.

Following the suggestions outlined above will make for safer motorcycle operation. The stakes are high. And who has a greater interest in motorcycle safety than the motorcyclist himself? The cyclist who takes responsibility for ensuring he has taken every precaution to make his ride a safe one is less likely to find himself injured in a serious accident.

Establishing Rapport To Excel as a Public Speaker

The speakers that touch your heart and impinge and impact the mind know how to establish a very special kind of rapport. In fact, it can be viewed as a very peculiar rapport that requires the public speaker to in a sense throw his or her heart and soul into their talk. Peculiar because the average sometimes even good public speaker is ignorant of this seldom addressed technique. Yet, just as in acting this is incredibly valuable because those who know this skill reach the top in their field. In acting it was taught by a famous Russian teacher and adapted by some acting schools in America. And, I am one of the few who knows the technology and more important how to teach it. In fact, the exercises are so concise; there has never been a student who didn’t get it.

Done well, it establishes a very very powerful connection, an emotional connection that allows people to almost literally be inside each other’s minds and provides a feeling of understanding of how the audience and speaker are thinking alike.

Some people consider this to be impossible, yet you can actually discover the secrets of how to do that with one person or thousands in the same room. How in the world do you make each member of an audience of many feel as though you were speaking directly to him or her?

As impossible as this may sound, it is an invigoration that most crave almost like a drug. The ability to get a public speaker’s audience into that zone or trance is something thought of with envy.

One secret is to be in the zone even before your audience. If you want your audience to be in harmony with you, be harmonious first. Get into the zone you’d like them to be in and they (for the most part anyway) will follow you.

Now, I am not a Pollyanna. I know that certain topics at certain times, especially in the opening portion of your talk(s) are momentarily far from harmonious. I remember well the moments like they were an hour ago during which a member of the audience challenged me.

In fact, it was during my first morning as a trainer when this man yelled out “This is a Crock of …you know what.” In order to establish the rapport that I knew was mandatory to establish, if I was going to succeed, I simply asked him to explain and listened most carefully. After he was finished telling me, I asked him if there was more. I needed to be sure I got it all before asking if it was all right to continue.

Needless to say that bump in the road was in its special way the opportunity for us to get into a great rapport. The rapport with that participant was even a little more special than the rest of the audience.

It helps a public speaker handle what ever emerges.

What is Your Zone?

In my mind I perceive the zone to be God, Love, Spirit …they are to me all synonymous. It is called the Dao in Far Eastern thought. Einstein said everything is energy. Our thoughts are, believe it or not, also energy! And, the best energy is the energy of the universe, the flow. When you mess with the flow you are in deep trouble. When you understand it and surrender, if you will, to it, you will win! Negative energy is the same energy but removed from or put up in resistance to the natural flow of the universe. No law is stronger that this law of the universe.

When you synchronize your thoughts and actions with the flow, you will win the endeavor. Appose it and it will essentially strike you down. Nothing can defeat the flow of the universe no matter how hard they try.

The people who spend their lives in jail for the most part tried their best to defy this law. Like the law of gravity they lost.

Anger is the opposite of the zone so we might analyze it as well. Far Eastern thought says a disagreement and anger only persist when there is a lie in it. Remove the lie and replace it with the truth and you are set free.

As a public speaker you must do your very best to be do and represent the truth. Are you really into your topic? Are you of clear mind? Are you up for the job? In order to have the confidence, the enthusiasm, you need to review your qualifications. This should provide you with a surge of emotional energy. You know that your public speech is uniquely yours and your audience will benefit by hearing you speak.

While you are not at fault, you made the decision to hold the grudge. Now if the universe is all energy and that energy is all going in one direction, the flow, you have now put up resistance to the flow and got that emotional energy stuck on you. You wear it like a dog that has a tail. Your tail is visible to those who know how to read people. We may be what we eat in terms of our cells, yet most of us ignore the effect our emotional charge no matter how deeply buried, has upon our cells. When you have roses, you have to water them about one inch of water per soil. It can depend on the soil how often you need to water. Sandy soil need frequent watering, but as a rule of thumb once a week is good for most soils.

Using mulch on the soil around the plants to retain the moisture in the soil is a good practice. Mulch will also keep down the growth of weeds and keep the soil cool. Successful teaching requires your students to have not only an interest in a subject but also an expertise in studying and learning skills. For that reason, I suggest taking the time to teach your students some simple but highly effective studying and learning techniques.

To give you an idea of what studying and learning techniques can do for your students, let me offer a peek at what I call The Big Picture Tool. This tool is about looking at information from a bird’s-eye perspective and developing an overview—understanding the basics of a subject before adopting a deeper, more detail-oriented perspective. It’s basically about avoiding that overwhelming phenomenon of not seeing a forest for all the trees. My experience is that understanding and applying the Big Picture Tool is of paramount importance for being both a successful student and a successful teacher.

When I look back at my own studies, I often see that new information was not presented from the big picture perspective. Instead, I was exposed to unrelated parts, which were not presented as parts of anything bigger. No overriding structures or detail-embracing and umbrella-like concepts were explained. (Yet, to be fair, I didn’t look for the big picture myself, either.) Consequently, my journey for knowledge was difficult or impossible at those times—too many pieces of the puzzle to see the picture.

It’s a bit of a tragedy that some of those teachers whose classes I attended were truly desperate to make their students understand. If only they hadn’t started off using a purely detail-oriented, specialist’s-perspective teaching style right from the first class. Maybe it was their way of demonstrating how much they expected from their students. Maybe they were not aware of the importance of the big picture perspective for their students.

My experience also tells me that most students are indeed willing to invest time and effort into their studies. But many lose interest too early if they can’t relate the details to a big picture they’ve never been exposed to. Such classes often appear as if neither side can communicate with the other, and bad exam results are the ultimate consequence. As a result, students blame their teachers (“The guy simply can’t explain!”) and teachers blame their students (“They’re lazy, uninterested, unwilling, and undisciplined!”).

Again, these comments are from my personal experiences—many years of formal studies in different fields, educational centers, and countries. What I can conclude from them is that whenever the teacher took time to start with the big picture, I found the learning process incredibly easier, especially in new fields of study. And if I had known and understood the Big Picture Tool, I could have taken that part of the process into my own hands.

So, if you are in a teaching role, what does all this mean for you?

My first recommendation is that you incorporate an element of preview
into your teaching style, especially when you start off teaching information that is new to your students. Regardless of your students’ level of expertise in the subject, you should first try to give them an idea of the “whole thing” before you deal with the details.

Second, teach your students how to look at information from a bird’s-eye perspective and how to develop an overview.

Doing so will make getting the subject message across to your students much easier.

The one question that everybody needs answered would have to be: What happens when I die?

Do you know what happens when you die?

All of a sudden it dawns on us that one day we will die. When this happens, it is sudden. We are young and the question just arises. We might blurt it out to one of our parents. We might think it over in our conscious minds. Yes, even as a young child, we are capable of doing this.

We might forget exactly the first time we pondered what happens when we die. It might have been when we saw a dead bird, or cat, or some other animal. It might have been when someone was speaking about a relative or friend who had died. It might have been when somebody we knew died.

As we grow older we will encounter death more often. On each occasion we encounter death, the question of what happens when we die will always arise in our minds. Somewhere along the line the issue of death has to be resolved if we are to have true contentment in our lives.

Various views on death have us being animals that are born just to die. This is part of the biological evolutionary process and we are merely part of this biologically aimless life without any purpose to existence at all.

Evolution does not necessarily have to be restricted to biological beings. There are views that have us on an evolutionary journey of becoming more knowledgeable and morally perfect through each trans-migration of our soul from lesser beings to higher beings. In certain philosophies, this soul migration is known as reincarnation and souls can be reincarnated as higher or lesser forms of mortal beings.

Hinduism has the caste system where trans-migration of the souls depends largely upon how one lives their lives on this earth. If a soul commits crimes or sins against other people, then a demotion will result in the next reincarnation. Conversely, what is considered to be a good life, where acts of kindness and generosity are frequent, a soul can expect to return in a higher form. In Hinduism, and even in its offshoot, Buddhism, this practice continues until each soul becomes one with the universe or the all-soul.

When you think about it, just being born to die is a futile existence, and even born to be reincarnated many times in various forms as our souls trans-migrate the animal and human world to eventually become non-existent or individually unknowable is also a pointless exercise for existence.

Other views on death have us either going to paradise or perishing in Hell. These are based on a sense of justice and retribution for deeds done. Unlike the reincarnation view, where people might return as insects because of unjust actions and deeds as a human until the next reincarnation, being cast into Hell is for a much longer duration than being reincarnated. More often though Hell is thought of as a place where there is endless torment forever without escape. This in itself seems to be purposeless existence also.

Death is something that everybody has to face. The truth about what happens after death is a matter that we need to find answers for in order to give our life purpose here on earth.

Merely being born to die sucks. Merely being born to go through a series of reincarnations is also a pointless excuse for existing. So while we can devise a number of theories about what happens at death, unless we can find the truth about why we are born in the first place, then whatever we might imagine happens at death is an exercise in futility.

Exposure to UV radiation not only leads to wrinkles, sun burn and aging, but increases the chances of skin cancer too. Individuals can be exposed to ultraviolet ray in different ways. While sun is the prime source of ultraviolet ray, some commercial appliances involve ultraviolet radiation too.

Not going out in the direct sunlight partly prevents sun damage. You need to apply some basic sun protection techniques. Sunscreen lotions and sun protection creams may be helpful to avoid sun damage due to UV radiation. You can visit online drugstores or your community store for suitable facial products and sunscreen.

2) Harmful Cleaners:

Almost everybody uses face wash, soaps, shampoo and other cleaners. What people do not know is that some of the ingredients of these products are not good for skin. Some soaps and shampoos may turn harsh to our skin based on the constituents used by the manufacturer. Most chemical based products are harsh to skin.

Soaps and cleansers which are too much alkaline in nature are harmful. Products that contain sodium sulfates and their analogs are often reported as rough for skin. On the contrary, baby products and glycerin-based moisturizing soaps and shampoos better suit our skin.

3) Chloride ion content and temperature of water:

Household water suppliers often use chlorine as disinfectant. Excessive chlorine in water may damage skins and lead to wrinkles, skin rashes and permanent discoloration through chemical reaction. The rate of chemical reaction is reported to increase with temperature. Hence, excessive hot baths, though refreshing, may be harmful for your skin. It is better to use warm water in bath tub, not hot water.

4) Excessive use of Makeup products:

Both makeup products and makeup removals contain ingredients which are harsh to skin. When a limited use of such products does not do any bad, excessive use over a long period is not at all good for health of your skin. Eye area is very much sensitive to excessive use of makeup. Puffiness around eyes and wrinkles in the eye area are the results of makeup overdoing.

5) Wrong skincare products:

You should be very careful while selecting your facial skin care. When natural skin care products are quiet soft, chemical-based products are harsher. It is good to consult dermatologist to know your skin type before purchasing your skincare products.

Cultivate your curiosity

I recently came across the following list written/compiled by David Heenan: Ten Keys to Life Fulfillment:

4. Maintain a maverick mind-set

This is an awesome list. I love it because it's balanced and has passion and practicality, hard work and faith, hope and focus. . . It's got almost everything.

All of the items on this list are things I dedicate myself to day after day and things which I strive to bring to my students and clients in each lesson and each seminar.

I am of the opinion that we can have everything that we want. We can both have satisfying work that pays us really well and a happy and fulfilling family life which we have plenty of time to nurture. We can choose to continue to grow and learn new ideas and cultivate our interests at any point in our lives.

The only thing I feel is missing from the above list which I most definitely am a proponent of is, 'cultivating curiosity'.

A lot of people struggle with stagnation later on in their careers. The edge just isn't there anymore and there's nothing really spurring continued advancement and growth. Lately I've heard from a number of my students that this is an issue in the financial services field. Many of the contemporaries of my students, as they approach retirement age, begin to find their hunger for achievement on the wane. I can't ever see myself truly retiring. A big part of wanting to continue my work in persuasion is that I have a constant curiosity about what can be improved.

Children have an innate curiosity. When we're new to the world we have a curiosity about absolutely everything. Why is the moon following us? Why is the sky blue? Who invented ice cream? How do birds fly? Then we become inundated by school and maybe we become overwhelmed by all that there is in the world and a lot of times, that curiosity wanes. Who has time to figure it all out?

Curiosity is a desire to know and learn about people, places and things outside of our experience. This is suspiciously similar to gaining rapport with our clients and prospects. There have been times in life when I had no interest in what was going on in the world around me. I'm not suggesting that periods of introspection are not valuable, but our culture seems to nurture navel gazing, that 'me, me, me' attitude, with a bent toward pathologizing and psychologizing ourselves to an unproductive and unhelpful extent.

When we turn our attention outward and open up to the possibilities of what is around us, there is incredible power particularly where persuasion is concerned. Our goal is to persuade our affluent clientle, and when we understand how other people think through keeping our minds and eyes open, and we combine it with what we have to offer, then we have the key to their criteria.

Curiosity can turn even the most mundane situation into an opportunity to learn. The real power of persuasion is in the details.
